Union Foothold in Condo Communities

A new law, effective on January 1, 2018, requires certain condo buildings to employ unionized employees.

This law requires any unionized building to remain unionized.  Should your current security or cleaning company become unionized, with or without your knowledge, your building must then remain unionized.  One way for a condo building service provider to become unionized is if they have been purchased by a unionized company.  Another is by employee vote.

Once a company employed by the condo corporation becomes unionized, the building is deemed unionized.  Future companies hired by the condo corporation must be unionized or prepared to become unionized before they can provide services.  This can significantly restrict which companies can be employed to provide services within a condo community.
