Toronto Island Airport Expansion would Benefit Condo Communities

May 2015

Porter Airlines wants to expand Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, otherwise known as Toronto Island Airport.

Should this expansion proceed, condo communities throughout the city will benefit.

For those who reside along one of the subway lines, Toronto Island Airport is a $3 subway ride away. No Highway 401 traffic. No taxis. No overnight or weekly vehicle parking at or near the airport. These expenses can amount to hundreds of dollars for a single trip to Toronto Pearson International Airport. For frequent travellers, living along a subway line provides easy access to

Toronto Island Airport. This is a convenience and financial saving attractive to those in the many condo communities situated along major transit corridors.

Porter Airlines wants longer runways. They also want permission to use newer jets that can handle more people and travel farther. This would mean more destinations, more flight options and more people using the airport.

Opponents claim that expansion of Toronto Island Airport would create a safety hazard, increase both water and air pollution, increase traffic congestion, deter tourists and damage public enjoyment of the waterfront. These are the same arguments used to oppose earlier development of Toronto Island Airport which have since been refuted. Despite huge increases in traffic at Toronto Island Airport, traffic in the area remains manageable and the Waterfront remains a popular destination.

Toronto Island Airport is an important community asset that contributes to making Toronto a livable city and condos an appealing lifestyle.
