The Cockroach Returns

January 2016

Cockroaches were nearly impossible to eradicate in the 1960s, 70s and 80s.

In the early 1990s a new product was introduced that virtually eliminated the cockroach as a concern for most residential buildings. Since this time the focus has been on bedbugs.

Cockroaches rarely cause structural damage. They can contaminate food and spread disease. People with asthma can have a negative reaction. Cockroaches are attracted to buildings because of the warm, damp conditions offered by kitchens, bathrooms, basements and plumbing areas. In condos, cockroaches often travel inside walls and migrate from one suite to another.

Cockroaches have learned to avoid the baits being used on them and have become more resistant to chemicals used against them. They are, once again, becoming a problem.

New products are being developed in the hope of keeping the cockroach problem in check.

To deter cockroaches

  • Rotate pest control products used to minimize the likelihood of cockroaches becoming resistant or learning to avoid specific baits
  • Keep areas clean and don’t leave food in the open
  • Use insecticide sprays for infested areas
