Sharing Amenities with Neighbours

April 2016

Few condo corporations have enough residents to offer a diversity of programs to accommodate the interests of all.

Exercise programs, for example, require enough individuals willing to pay so that an instructor or trainer is compensated for their time. From a programming and community perspective, it may make sense for neighbouring condo corporations to share facilities. A condo corporation with a sufficiently large room for exercise classes may open up classes to neighbouring condo corporations or the outside community. Another may offer guest speakers on various topics.

Such an approach is contrary to the exclusive use doctrine practiced by many condo corporations. It does allow for greater diversity in programs, socialization and an enhanced lifestyle.

A balanced approach to the use of amenities may be the more sustainable approach.
