Toronto condo corporations pay for discarding trash. They can reduce these fees by diverting recycling and organics from trash to their blue and green bins.
Vancouver condos and apartments are now required to implement a more stringent waste diversion program for food scraps.
Condo corporations that fail to keep food scraps out of the garbage are subject to surcharges.
Food scraps, or organics, have been banned from Vancouver area landfills and incinerators since January 1, 2015. Prior to July 1, 2015 the city undertook an education program. After this date waste haulers bringing organics to landfill sites became subject to surcharges.
Haulers are responsible for determining which buildings are failing to enforce organics collection and to pass surcharges along to them.
