A fifty year old 10-storey condo building was evacuated after water damage caused the building to lower by 5 to 8 cm.
The problem began after someone noticed cracks in a column and called the fire department. Fire crews found more cracks and doors that could not be closed. About 400 residents were evacuated as the building was evaluated.
Cracks were the result of deterioration due to water damage. The weight of the building on columns had caused it to shift.
The building had suffered from water infiltration for a number of years and damaged columns were not being properly maintained.
