Drug and Alcohol Safety Policy

December 2020

Legalization of cannabis is prompting changes by employers to ensure employees are not impaired while on the job.  While the use, cultivation and distribution of cannabis is legal since October 17, 2018, its use in the workplace can remain restricted.

Condo corporations, as employers, should consider implementing changes to protect employees and residents from employees that may desire to work while under the influence of cannabis.  Putting into place a Drug and Alcohol Policy to cover cannabis, alcohol and other drugs that can impair individuals in the corporation workplace should be considered.

Employees and contractors working on condo property while under the influence of drugs can be a danger to themselves and those around them.  Their decision making can be impaired.  Protecting residents and property can include ensuring judgement and capabilities of employees and contractors are not impaired while on the premises.
