Condo residents are not likely to support something they do not understand. It is necessary that they be informed of the financial benefits of waste management, the different categories of waste (landfill garbage, organics and recycling) and enforcement measures or incentives adopted by the condo corporation.
One way to do this is to establish an Environment Committee. Establish a goal of 70% waste diversion by Reducing, Reusing and Recycling what in the past has been thrown down the garbage chute. When achieved, this means 30% of waste going to landfill and financial savings for everyone.
Utilize City of Toronto programs to train 3R Ambassadors for your building. These should be volunteers willing to staff a table in the lobby, provide waste diversion resources to residents, and to educate on proper waste diversion policies in the building.
Instruct staff to monitor resident trash disposal and identify violations.
Communicate the positive impact waste management is having on the overall budget. Let residents know just how much is being saved, thus keeping maintenance fees low.
