A group of condo owners has filed a complaint with the BC Human Rights Tribunal against their condo board which has decided to conduct all official business in Mandarin.
The dispute began after a painting project went over-budget because of rotting wood beams that had to be replaced. One Chinese owner gathered sufficient proxy votes to remove non-Mandarin speaking board members. Soon after the board replaced its condominium manager which some believe to be another cost-cutting initiative.
Condo fees are under $200 per month. This seems to be inadequate to maintain a building infrastructure.
This appears to be a dispute among those who want to maintain their building so that it remains a desirable place to live and others who prefer to run the building until it fails.
