The Ontario Power Authority provides suggestions that can save money and have a big impact on energy usage.
- Power bars with auto-shut-off can detect when electronics go into sleep mode. When sleep mode is detected, the bar will shut down power to designated pugged-in devices.
- Reduce or eliminate phantom power use. Phantom power use comes from electronics or appliances which continue to use power when turned off. This can account for up to 20% of household energy use. Unplug electronics when not in use. As an alternative, consider using a power bar with a timer or auto-shut-off.
- For recessed or pot lighting, consider LEDs. They provide more focused lighting and last up to 30% longer.
- Turn down the light level to save electricity and extend the life of light bulbs.
- Consider motion sensors for rooms where lights are unnecessarily left on.
- Ceiling fans require 10% of the electricity required to run a window air conditioner.
- If using an electric water heater, wrapping it in an insulated blanket can reduce energy loss by up to 30%.
- Thermostats allow for customization of temperatures.
- Weatherstripping can help reduce drafts. It helps to ensure temperatures around windows are consistent.
- Stay Cool! Draw curtains or blinds to shade windows. This can help keep out heat from direct sunlight.
- Turn off air conditioner when on vacation. In many high- rise condos, turning off heat or turning down the thermostat when on vacation is appropriate.
- Stay Warm! Open curtains and blinds during the day. Let the sun warm a cold room.
- Turn off lights whenever leaving a room.
- Reheat food in a toaster oven rather than an oven.
