Years ago people would wake up and retrieve their milk from the doorstep. In the early hours the milkman made their deliveries before most were awake. The “milkman” is making a return as digital shopping for food becomes increasingly popular.
Online shopping for groceries, increasingly popular with those in the 18-35 age group, is the fastest growing segment in retail according to the Food Marketing Institute (FMI). This organization has surveyed industry trends for 40 years. In 2017, 43 percent of millennials surveyed said they shop online for groceries – a 50 percent increase from 2016.
Supermarkets were once considered immune from the internet. Today that is changing. An increasing number of people are purchasing their groceries online. Others purchase ingredients for “home prepared” meals or fully prepared meals that require reheating. They pay more to have someone deliver to them or have an order ready for pick up.
